Happy Canada Day!
I did not blog yesterday, as my furniture finally arrived the day before and I have been furiously unpacking. My friend Yvonne stayed for 2 nights to help me. She worked like a demon. She got so much unpacked that I wanted to tell her to stop. I couldn't find places to put the stuff. So now the place is in chaos.
Of course, the usual Sri Lankan story unfolded in bringing the container from Colombo to Kandy. First of all, it was a 20' container, which I could have told anyone could not negotiate the roads. Apparently, they kept getting stopped by the police because they were afraid that it would down power wires. I am amazed that it made it through the Colombo/Kandy road. When it got through Kandy to Sirimalwatte, the problems really started. Some places they had to crawl along as people walked in front of the truck and moved wires and funeral banners out of the way. In the end, it could not make it down my road which is very narrow and the wires are really low. No-one would have thanked them for pulling down our wires, including me. We just finally got some regular power supply back.
In the end, they had to park the truck down near the bridge. The driver, his assistant and another worker that Yvonne has brought with her to help slept in it and guarded it over night. Then she hired a smaller lorry to bring it to the house.
Here are the mama and baby lorries.
Had I been in Colombo to receive the stuff, I would have had it unpacked there. The container was only half full anyway. In any event, it was Yvonne's headache. I went off and had my fur/claw done and returned to a house full of boxes.
It has been fun to see all the things. Some of it I had forgotten about. Only 1 thing has been damaged so far, which is not so bad considering the distance it has come.
While you enjoy the Canada Day holiday, I will be welcoming a little bit of Canada to Sri Lanka.
